Tawanda Meats – Know Your Producer

OUR ANIMAL CARE

Because we are dedicated to the production of a quality, all grass fed meat, our animal numbers are limited. We have only those numbers that can be well maintained on farm produced grasses.

Therefore, we run one bull with 30 cows and maintain 80 ewes and 5 rams. We use rotational grazing methods to maintain steady animal growth, soil health and parasite reduction.

Predator problems include two primary species: the bald eagle that will cripple and blind a calf or take a lamb; and the coyote that will take any sheep or lamb.

Our control methods are passive:

1) our soon-to-deliver cows are brought up to the hill next to our house to give birth - the eagles don't like people and so our cows and calves are safe. Our calves and our lambs are identity tagged at birth. There is no pain when this is done that quickly and this allows us definite identity recognition of each and every meat animal.

2) We keep a sharp eye on the sheep from our home on a hill above the pastures and we use our beloved little insurance policy guard dog “Aetna”. Our animals are born here, nurtured here and allowed to grow out on our grass. We personally transport them from farm to USDA facility. We know their parentage, health history and life story. This translates into safe and well as succulent meat on your plate.
